The resume is a bio with added value

The first step you will need to take before looking for a job is to create a CV. It’s a document that can decide your future, so it’s worth spending time to create a really good one. You can choose either a classic structured CV or a resume. What is the difference between these types of docs?

Hundreds of CVs pass through the hands of HR professionals and headhunters. Usually they are very similar and only a few of them shine out. Your goal is for the HR specialist to be interested in yours. Therefore, if you create your CV differently than other candidates, you will gain a competitive advantage – you will increase the chance that the HR will remember you. And that can be the first step to success.

It’s not a CV like a CV

Most people attach a traditional structured CV to the response to a job advertisement, which summarizes the candidate’s previous work experience in brief points. As for the scope of your CV, it is ideal if you can summarize your professional history on one page. All information will be in one place, which will save the human resources time. And it doesn’t happen that other pages of the document wander somewhere.

Creative professions, such as graphic designers, copywriters or illustrators, can also attach a link to their portfolio or a visual presentation of their work to date. The specific form of the implemented projects often tells the HR more than just a strict list of positions.

Tell more about your personality!

If you do not want to stay only with the list of previous experience, you can transform your CV into a resume. It comes from an Anglo-American environment and tells more about the candidate’s abilities and overall settings than about specific work experience. Thanks to this, the summary provides the HR specialist with a more comprehensive picture of the job seeker’s personality.

In the summary, in addition to work experience, you can also highlight your work achievements, mention completed courses and obtained certifications, or emphasize your strengths. Both verbally and graphically. You can use simple graphs, brief infographics or pictograms referring to specific skills or characteristics. In summary, you simply not only sell your work history, but also your personality.

When you mention specific skills, you can make it easier for the HR specialist to make decisions. In what? If the candidate states in a structured CV that he has worked as a project manager for three years, it can mean practically anything. But when he writes that from the position of project manager he led a ten-member team that managed to increase sales by 50% year-on-year, it says much more about his abilities.

Gain a competitive advantage through a resume

Does it make sense to you? Create your own resume! When it comes to graphic design, you will find a number of patterns and templates on the Internet that will tell you which way you can go. However, most of them are adapted to the needs of foreign HR professionals, who do not always have to match the Irish ones. Therefore, adjust the content of the resume to suit the position you want to apply for, or take a specialist to help you with what information you should include.

And watch out! Also keep in mind that the resume is not universally applicable. If you want to apply, for example, to a state administration, a scientific institution or a very formal company that is based on traditions and moderation, a creative summary may not be the right choice. In this case, you better bet on the classic in the form of information-saturated structured CV. In this case, less is more.
