What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a structured programme where you work with an employer and attend off-the-job training (at a college or training centre). You earn a salary from day one while gaining a nationally recognised qualification โ€” typically at QQI Level 6, 7, or even a full degree.

Key point: Apprenticeships aren't just for school leavers. Many programmes accept career changers of all ages. There's no upper age limit.

You split time between your employer (on-the-job) and a training centre or college (off-the-job). During off-the-job phases, you receive a training allowance. The employer pays your salary during on-the-job phases.

Tips for Getting Accepted

Apprenticeships are competitive. Here's how to stand out:

Show enthusiasm: Demonstrate genuine interest in the trade or profession. Visit worksites, attend open days, research the industry.
Get experience: Even a week of work shadowing shows commitment. Ask local businesses for a trial period.
Prepare your CV: Use our CV Builder โ€” even with limited experience, highlight any relevant projects or skills.
Contact employers directly: Ring or email companies in your area. A personalised approach is how most apprentices in Ireland get started.
